Could Your Next Connection Be Waiting at Your Local Studio?
With over 3 million people in the UK experiencing loneliness*, could your next connection be waiting at your local studio?
London: connected, vibrant and teeming with life. Or is it? There is a preconception among non-city dwellers that urban life must be brimming with social connections and eligible romantic prospects, yet with more than a third of Londoners reporting feelings of loneliness**, for many, city-living is far from the glossy idyll portrayed by social media and tourist brochures.
There is no doubt that the pandemic exacerbated social isolation and loneliness for many, with consequent lockdowns meaning even the most sociable among us were forced to batten down the hatches. Particularly disheartening was the closure of traditional community spaces like pubs, gyms and town halls, the consequences of which continue to have a lasting impact. With reduced opportunities for social interaction, the majority of us turned to our phone screens for company.
Yoga for Connection in a Disconnected World
But when it comes to meeting new people – romantic or platonic – anyone with a dating app can attest to their draining and transactional nature. With a ‘swipe and discard’ mentality at an all time high there’s little room or patience for true connection, and what once felt promising now feels tired. With the average app user taking just three seconds to judge a potential partner before swiping, is it any wonder we aren’t getting to the point of meeting up, let alone a place where interests are shared and genuine connections forged?
Enter: Wellness, Fitness and hobby based platforms, which are attracting users who want to connect with like-minded individuals over shared passions, interests and activities. Whether you are a Runner [hi, Strava], Foodie, Bookworm or Yogi, there is a community out there ready to welcome you with open arms.
Find a Yoga Community Near You
At MoreYoga community sits at the heart of what we do, with 35 neighbourhood studios primed to help foster local connections through the power of Yoga. Furthermore, earlier this year we uncovered further evidence for the trend towards hobby-based encounters through a survey of 2,000 Brits. 74% of respondents said it was important for them to feel a sense of belonging in their social circles, 59% of those that go to gym classes listed community and connection as an important part of the overall experience, and 35% said having someone they knew to bump into would make them more likely to attend the class.
So, is it time to ditch the dating apps for good? Could a shared love of Yoga lead to a more positive and fulfilling social life, perhaps even the love of your life? As yoga dating continues to grow in popularity, maybe it’s time to roll out your mat — and open up to something more.
