So what exactly is rocket yoga?

Rocket yoga is a dynamic, fast-paced style of yoga developed by Larry Schultz in San Francisco in the 1980s. Built from the traditional Ashtanga series, a rocket yoga sequence remixes the classic postures and removes the rigid rules – so you can modify, play, and progress at your own speed. The name came from Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, who said the practice “gets you there quicker”.

A typical class moves quickly through sun salutations, standing poses, and seated postures, with plenty of opportunities to explore arm balances, backbends, and inversions. Rocket yoga poses can look impressive, but everything is broken down into achievable steps – and is rocket yoga for beginners? Absolutely: every pose has an accessible version, and our teachers will meet you exactly where you are.

At MoreYoga, our classes bring all the energy and playfulness of the original practice, in a welcoming space where falling over is part of the fun.

The Benefits You Can Expect

The practice has a loyal following for good reason – it’s one of the most fun and physically rewarding styles you can practise….a few rocket yoga benefits include:

  1. Serious full-body strength
The pace and repetition of a rocket sequence builds real strength through the shoulders, core, and legs – the foundations you need for arm balances, handstands, and everything in between.
  2. Freedom within a framework
Unlike traditional Ashtanga, rocket encourages modification. You follow the sequence but you’re free to take the variation that works for your body on the day – which keeps the practice fresh for years.
  3. Faster progress on the postures you want
Rocket puts arm balances and inversions front and centre, with drills and step-by-step breakdowns built into the class. If crow, headstand, or handstand are on your wishlist, this is the fastest route.
  4. A moving meditation with a heartbeat
The pace demands your full attention, which quiets a busy mind better than sitting still ever could. You leave sweaty, clear-headed, and buzzing.
  5. A community feel
Rocket classes tend to attract playful, supportive regulars. Expect encouragement when you try something new, and a few laughs when it doesn’t quite land.
