So what exactly is Dharma yoga?
Dharma yoga is a style of yoga created by Sri Dharma Mittra, who has taught in New York since the 1960s and famously photographed himself in 908 postures. The dharma yoga meaning runs deeper than movement though – “dharma” refers to living truthfully and kindly, and the practice is as much about compassion and devotion as it is about postures.
Physically, classes flow gracefully through classical Hatha postures with soft, dance-like transitions. It’s famous for its approach to inversions and backbends – taught with such lightness and encouragement that poses you thought were years away suddenly feel within reach.
At MoreYoga, our Dharma-inspired classes carry that same spirit – challenging, graceful, and always taught with warmth. Expect to be gently encouraged past what you thought you could do.
The Benefits You Can Expect
The practice offers a rare combination of physical depth and genuine heart….a few benefits include:
- Grace under challenge
Dharma sequences teach you to move through demanding postures with softness rather than strain – a skill that transforms every other style you practise. - The friendliest route to inversions
Headstands, shoulder stands, and their many variations are core to the practice, taught step by step in a spirit of play rather than pressure. - Heart-opening backbends
The practice works progressively into deep, supported backbends that counteract hunched, desk-bound posture and genuinely lift your mood. - A practice with soul
Classes weave in breathwork, meditation, and Dharma’s teachings on kindness – you leave feeling better as well as stronger. - Longevity in your practice
Sri Dharma Mittra is living proof: the emphasis on ease, breath, and compassion builds a practice your body can sustain for decades.
