So what exactly is restorative yoga?
Restorative yoga is a gentle, prop-supported style of yoga designed to bring the body into a state of deep rest. Unlike more active styles, restorative yoga poses are held for anywhere between five and twenty minutes, with bolsters, blocks, and blankets supporting you completely – so your muscles can fully let go without any effort at all.
When people think about yoga, they often picture dynamic movement and challenging postures. This practice is the opposite: a typical restorative yoga sequence might include just four to six positions in a whole class, with each one carefully set up so your body feels completely held. There’s no stretching to your edge and no strength work – just stillness, breath, and release.
At MoreYoga, our restorative classes create a calm, nurturing space where you can switch off from busy London life and give your body and mind the rest they’re genuinely craving.
The Benefits You Can Expect
In a city that never slows down, this practice offers something genuinely different: permission to rest. It’s the perfect counterbalance to busy schedules and dynamic movement….a few benefits include:
- The perfect counterbalance to dynamic yoga
If you love Vinyasa, Rocket, or other dynamic styles, this is the missing half of your practice. Deep passive rest gives your muscles and connective tissue time to recover and repair, helping you come back to your mat feeling stronger. - Activates your rest-and-digest response
Long, supported holds signal your parasympathetic nervous system to switch on, lowering your heart rate and easing stress hormones. It’s one of the most effective ways to counter the chronic stress of city life. - Better sleep
Restorative yoga postures practised in the evening help quiet a busy mind and prepare the body for rest. Many of our members tell us their sleep improves within just a few weeks of a regular practice. - Undoing desk-life tension
Hours of sitting leave the hips, chest, and spine tight and compressed. Supported restorative yoga positions gently open these areas over longer holds, without effort or strain. - Accessible to absolutely everyone
There’s no flexibility or fitness requirement. Whether you’re brand new to yoga, recovering from injury, or simply exhausted – this practice meets you exactly where you are, and the props do the work for you.
