Rewind to the early noughties & the word Manifesting wasn’t really a part of our vocabulary, just as the well-being industry wasn’t really big business & Instagram wasn’t yet so ingrained in society but Manifesting certainly seems to already be the buzzword of 2020. Everyone’s doing it – so what does it mean?! I was recently privy to a very loud and very in-depth conversation celebrating one of them finally getting the dream job they had always desired because they had…you guessed it…manifested it. It’s the headline of countless self-care books, courses and is of course, also plastered across the online world…
‘Manifest yourself happy’, ’How to manifest your dream life’, ‘Manifesting money & abundance in this easy 5 step guide when you sign up here’….well, that all sounds fantastic but I fear we’re in danger of monetising what can be a very pure and very powerful practice. In order to understand the concept of unfiltered manifestation we need to understand it and respect it as a practice, rather than a quick fix. In its purest form it is working with your own energy and understanding how powerful your energy really is. If you actually google the word ‘Manifesting’ you will enter into a vortex of manifestation madness, so let’s focus a little on the meaning behind this current buzzword here instead.
The power of attraction and energetic currency have also become oversaturated thanks to social media and phrases like ‘your vibe attracts your tribe’ and ‘energy flows where attention goes’ are everywhere – t-shirts, screen savers, wall hangings (and also all over my Instagram account, admittedly) and that’s because I genuinely do believe these statements are true but expecting to manifest the life of your dreams without putting the work in energetically is not realistic. Trust me, it requires real commitment in order to see real change occur in your reality.
So, how can we introduce this practice into our lives and what does it actually mean to Manifest something? For me, it’s similar to praying, but instead of asking God, or whatever you believe God to be, to create or provide something for you…you are working with your own energy and bringing something into being for yourself. By energetically committing time and intention to something you can create change through your own thoughts & actions. If we understand Manifesting as Intentionally creating something we desire energetically, then we can begin to manifest with more meaning. For example, if you want to change careers but all you’re doing is complaining about your current job – the likelihood is you’ll probably dislike your role even more and nothing will change very quickly because your putting your energy into the negative elements of the situation. If you want to Manifest a new career that inspires you, then you need to make some changes.
“While intent is the seed of manifestation, action is the water that nourishes the seed. Your actions must reflect your goals in order to achieve true success.” Steve Maraboli: Life, the Truth, and Being Free.
I find Manifesting with real meaning is a three part practice:
INTENTION
Start by finding a quiet, comfortable seat and either writing down or bringing to mind an intention you wish to manifest, for example: I will find a new job that I’m passionate about or I will find love or I will find more financial security – whatever it is that you want to Manifest within your life. I would suggest making it something you deeply desire, something that you can really commit your energy too and won’t forget about in a few days’ time.
ENERGY
To intentionally create something energetically we need to commit to this intention fully. One way of harnessing your energy is to invite it into this intention, what I mean by that is to spend time imagining how it would feel to be living what you wish to manifest. How would things be different, what needs to shift in order for this to change? Inviting something into your life is also a way to offer it up to the universe, or whatever it is that you believe in, and really believe that it will happen. To start living as though it will, to start trusting that you deserve it and that you are ready to receive what you are Manifesting. Another way to make your dreams more real is vision boarding, I run a regular workshop called Manifesting Magic with The Self Evolution Coach (aka. Alice Carder) and we encourage our attendees to put their vision boards up somewhere they can see them and to look at their vision boards every day to help keep these dreams and goals alive energetically and keep them focused on their intention.
Now, I’m not suggesting you spend every waking minute spouting positive quotes at strangers but if you spend all day thinking you’ll never get where you want to go, you likely won’t ever get there, but, if you step up energetically and begin to notice how you are speaking to yourself, others and what your actions are saying, it’s likely something is going to change for the better. I did it myself when I was leaving my steady job to become a yoga teacher – instead of talking and behaving like I was going to succeed, I kept telling people about my back up plans and how risky it was, I was operating on a frequency of fear and I wasn’t committing energetically to what I wanted to Manifest. When I started becoming more conscious of what I was putting out there, things started seriously shifting.
Albert Einstein famously said, ”Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality.”
ACTION
As a yoga teacher I always encourage my students to set an intention ahead of each class so they are actively focusing their energy on this intention throughout their yoga asana practice rather than drifting off into other corners of their consciousness…but what about when we take this intention off the mat? What about when we begin to bring action into this intention to make it a reality? This is when the real magic happens but it requires action and application – if you’re manifesting finding love, maybe there is some internal work you need to do first to be ready to receive love. If you’re manifesting a new career, it’s likely you’ll need to study or do some volunteering in that field. If you want to manifest a better work, life balance you probably need to introduce some boundaries and if like me, you want to become a yoga teacher, you need to believe that it’s possible and probably start looking into trainings!
“A key to manifestation is that when the doors of opportunity open, you have to walk through them.” Russell Eric Dobda
Manifesting with meaning has so much to do with having faith and really trusting that it’s possible to make your dreams, goals and intentions become a reality. Remember that if you truly desire something and you fully commit your energy into making it happen, you can create magic. Happy Manifesting!
