Sometimes us yogis focus a little too much on what happens while we’re on the mat – but what are you doing outside of your yoga class to look after yourself?

For those of you that love a good book to bury your nose in, we’ve compiled a list of must-read stories, self help books and guide books that will enhance your yoga journey like never before!

The Secret by Rhonda Byrne

If you find self-help books a little cringey, this book is not the place to start. The Secret, proclaimed as life changing by many, is full of the most unadulterated cheese. Regardless, it is regarded as a life-changing book for many – if it’s a bit too much for you in book form, try the audiobooks (read by Rhonda Byrne herself in a soothing Aussie accent).

The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran

Written in the 1920s by a Lebanese author, this book is amazingly progressive even today. Not so much of a story as a book of powerful mantras and advice about every area of life – love, children, work, freedom. You can read this book from start to finish in one go, but it is equally good to dip in and out of when you’re feeling off track.

The Key Muscles of Yoga by Ray Long

For those more scientific brains among us, this book is the perfect companion. You’ll find diagrams of each asana alongside explanations of which muscles should be working the hardest. This book is great for taking your understanding of your practice to another level!

You Can Heal Your Life by Louise Hay

Again, the sceptics may not be such a huge fan of this book, but so many people have been influenced by this book that it deserves a mention. Louise Hay talks about how she achieved massive success in the face of terrible hardship – an honest account with some hard hitting advice for you and your life too.

The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A F*** by Sarah Knight

Hate self-help books? Read this one and tell me you still don’t like them. Sarah Knight’s light-hearted but super effective way of managing how many f***s you give a day is as hilarious as it is useful. This book is a relief when you’ve spent hours knee-deep in serious self-help material.

Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins

If you prefer to get down to business and make changes instantly, Awaken the Giant Within provides a practical guide to getting what you want. There are hundreds of exercises to do in this book and generally all of them will provide you with deeper insight into how to get to your goals. This book is massive, so take your time working through and don’t expect to finish it any time soon.

Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss

A collection of every self-help tip that Tim Ferriss has ever received. Split into three sections – Healthy, Wealthy and Wise – this book contains advice from world-class gymnasts, billionaires and leading academics on what they do daily to succeed. Dip in and out each morning for a quick shot of inspiration!
